Take a Deep Breath

I have been running non-stop for months. From studying 6-7 days a week for the MCAT, primary/secondary applications to working 40+ hours weekly, then play dates, the park, guppy swim lessons, and limited sleep. And I honestly did not know the toil it had taken on my body until today.

I literally completed my Fellowship on Tuesday and was on to another opportunity on Wednesday. Today after spending a day at an OB/GYN Clinic, seeing patients, participating in discussion and listening to presentations, I could barely keep my eyes open as I drove home. Then I was greeted by a very energetic kid and my exhaustion was an after thought and I remembered who I was and what my life consisted of, that yesterday, today and even tomorrow, will probably be considered calm days in the grand scheme of things, compared to what my future will hold. Then I took deep breath in and thought about the budding couple I met expecting their very own Thanksgiving surprise. And, after discussing school lunch, math, reading and my day downtown, my little one reminded me that I always have a "test patient" at home who doesn't mind a cold stethoscope. And then I took a deep breath out.

Have you every looked up and been amazed at how much time has gone by, whether you were consumed in excitement or with the daily going abouts of life?? That's sort of how I feel, it will be 2015 before we know it and I feel like just last week I was waiting for the snow storm to pass. So tonight I plan to indulge in whatever fantasy my mind can concoct and have long sweet dreams. And tomorrow I will get up and do it all again, reminding myself throughout the day to just take a deep breath and take it all in as comes.

  1. Yes, take it one day at a time! You've got this, and it will all be worth it in the end :-)

  2. What MCAT study schedule did you use? Did you go by topic, or just take test, etc...

I am going for round 3 and I HAVE to do better, however every time I pull out the books I just get overwhelmed. And now I have to prepare for the 2015 test.... argh.. anywho... Best wishes for this application cycle :)

    1. This time around my work schedule was slightly different and my study period ran from summer into back to school time for my grade school aged child. I studied on & off from like Feb-May but I was not consistent at all then towards the end of May into June, which was surprising when my work load increased ten fold, I hit the books hard. With my work schedule I tried my best to study minimum 2 hours a day during the week and set a side about 5-8 hours 1 weekend day and this was purely content, mid June I started doing 1 practice a week, and made it mandatory that I review each section of my test and review content for my wrong answers with in 48 hrs of taking the practice test, (I slacked and never reviewed my verbal section, which proved to bite me right in the butt) so over all I did about 11 practice test from June-Sept. with my content I did it by subject area for those 3-4 weeks and then once I started the practice test phase it was: Review all and focus in on the topic/subject I got wrong. For me this helped increase my PS and BS score but because I didn't give verbal the attention it needed VS decreased. This method worked for me (in the science sections) so it depends on your learning style and with the new sections being add, that may require a different approach to prep also. Good luck with studying, best advise is create a schedule, try to stick to it as much as possible, if its not working find something that is and do as many practice test as you possibly can even if you feel you need more content studying and always under timed conditions.
